Why do churches ordain pastors? 

This past weekend, I had the joy of participating in the ordination service of one of our 51ÂÜÀò pastors. I will then participate in another ordination service on June 23. In my time of service with 51ÂÜÀò Northeast, I have participated in several Ordination Councils and Services. So, I again ask the question, why do churches ordain pastors?  

The ordination of clergy celebrates the call that an individual is set apart for the work of ministry. Further it is a recognition that the individual has prepared themselves through training in theology and leadership skills. 

In a network of churches like 51ÂÜÀò, because of local church autonomy, the authority to ordain rests with the leadership and congregation of the local church. The 51ÂÜÀò Northeast team assists the local church by providing a framework and process for ordination.  

Towards the end of the service last Saturday, the Elders of the church, the participating pastors from the ordination council, and I gathered around the candidate. In that moment we laid hands on the pastor and his wife in consecration. This was the pinnacle moment of the service and culmination of a month's long process and life-long preparation of the pastor. It was a privilege to be part! 

The ordination process is one of many ways we partner with the local church to strengthen its leadership and pastors.
